Department of Western Languages and Literatures

1. To cultivate experts of intercultural communication, researchers, and scientists who possess the competence to advance their acquired knowledge in translation (studies) in disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of specialisation such as translation history, translation criticism, translation theories, terminology, lexicography, literary translation, technical translation, audiovisual translation, and machine translation.

2. To enhance students’ awareness of social responsibility and commitment to the common good by equipping them with the ability to act responsibly in ways that promote environmental awareness, sustainability, accessibility, inclusivity, and well-being, as well as fostering their critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills.

3. To develop and implement innovative educational approaches that meet current scientific and societal challenges, broaden students’ career prospects and scientific proficiency, and promote interdisciplinary interaction and specialization.

4. To build stronger links between the university and industry that enable students to develop problem-solving, entrepreneurial, and lifelong learning skills, strengthen their theoretical knowledge through practice, and enhance their employability.

5. To actively integrate artificial intelligence and technological solutions into education and research, continuously enhance digitalisation initiatives, and consequently apply teaching, learning, and assessment methods that address current demands.

6. To increase the Department’s international recognition and facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience among faculty and students at national and global levels through national and international academic exchange programmes, collaborative projects, and dual degree opportunities.

The Bachelor Programme in French Translation and Interpreting is designed to cultivate experts of intercultural communication, researchers, and scientists who possess the competence to advance their acquired knowledge in translation (studies) in disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of specialisation such as translation history, translation criticism, translation theories, terminology, lexicography, literary translation, technical translation, audiovisual translation, and machine translation. 

The Programme seeks to develop innovative educational approaches grounded in interdisciplinary interaction and specialization, while continuously strengthening university-industry collaborations. In line with its vision of increased international engagement, the Programme also promotes the exchange of knowledge and experience on a global scale.

Graduates of the Bachelor Programme in French Translation and Interpreting are individuals who are able to integrate theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of Translation Studies; who possess advanced linguistic and cultural analysis and interpretation competencies; who are proficient in translation and interpreting; and who have developed critical thinking, entrepreneurship, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making skills, as well as a strong sense of responsibility in acting to promote sustainability, accessibility, inclusivity, and well-being.

Our graduates, who are conscious of professional ethics, act with social, cultural, and environmental sensitivity; they have the ability to engage and collaborate with other disciplines; they respond to the current demands of the language services industry and are equipped to adapt to future professional innovations. They are competent experts of communication capable of using AI-assisted translation tools and related language technologies across multiple languages.

Our interdisciplinary curriculum provides graduates with diverse career opportunities in both public institutions and the private sector, at national and international levels.

Graduates possess the qualifications required for employment in a broad range of fields, including the language industry, media, publishing, diplomacy, ministries, multinational companies operating in various sectors, banks, and educational institutions.

Graduates may also pursue graduate studies in Translation Studies, Linguistics, Communication, Cultural Studies, and related fields, and build academic careers by working as researchers, instructors, or specialists at universities, research centres, and in international projects.

The objective of this programme is to cultivate experts of intercultural communication, researchers, and scientists who

  • Possess advanced translation and interpreting skills; capable of integrating theories and practices of translation (studies), and are open to professional and academic development,

  • Act responsibly in ways that promote environmental awareness, sustainability, accessibility, inclusivity and well-being and who have acquired skills in critical thinking, entrepreneurship, problem solving, ethical decision-making, and lifelong learning,

  • Have the skills of using current artificial intelligence and information technologies and the competence to advance their acquired knowledge in translation (studies) in disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of specialisation such as translation history, translation criticism, translation theories, terminology, lexicography, literary translation, technical translation, audiovisual translation, and machine translation,

  • Are able to use translation (studies) terminology in different working languages, conduct field-related research, collaborate in team-based settings, and effectively present their work, 

Have the competence to work in managerial, research, and applied roles in national and international institutions in both the public and private sectors as individuals with the ability to define their career goals and manage their professional development and who are committed to professional ethical values.

Upon successful completion of the programme, students will be able to:

PO-1) Carry out written and oral translation processes across various fields of expertise and text types with social, cultural, ethical, and environmental awareness and sensitivity to meaning, identity, representation, value, and context, and with a quality-oriented approach that is appropriate for purpose, context, target audience, terminological consistency, and text type acting as multilingual individuals who are open to professional and academic development.

PO-2) Apply the oral and written communication skills acquired in different working languages, along with their background knowledge in literature, civilisation, language, thought, history, and culture, to effectively and consciously manage processes such as translation, critical discourse analysis, text interpretation, and pre- and post-translation evaluation.

PO-3) Integrate theoretical knowledge gained from disciplines such as linguistics, semiotics, lexicography, and discourse analysis and criticism into translation processes, and use these approaches to analyse the multilayered semantic structures of texts in order to produce translations and translation criticisms appropriate for context and purpose.

PO-4) Synthesise knowledge acquired from different disciplines through an interdisciplinary approach.

PO-5) Advance their acquired knowledge in translation (studies) in disciplinary and interdisciplinary areas of specialisation such as translation history, translation criticism, translation theories, terminology, lexicography, literary translation, technical translation, audiovisual translation, and machine translation.

PO-6) Use computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, machine translation systems, and AI-supported translation technologies widely employed in translation processes to perform professional tasks such as editing, proofreading, and quality assessment in accordance with translation standards and evaluate translation quality according to criteria such as purpose and contextual appropriateness, terminological accuracy, and functionality.

PO-7) Follow scientific and technological developments in translation (studies) and related fields, assess career opportunities, identify personal and professional development goals, and adopt lifelong learning strategies to achieve these goals.

PO-8) Act with a sense of social responsibility and justice and in accordance with professional ethical principles, quality standards, and universal values by taking into account potential legal and societal consequences of their scientific research and professional activities.

PO-9) Work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

PO-10) Access reliable sources of information, conduct literature reviews, and design and carry out academic research in theoretical, descriptive, and applied areas of translation studies.

PO-11) Effectively communicate advanced topics, theories, research, and problem-solution pairs in the field of translation (studies) to all relevant stakeholders, using appropriate terminology, both orally and in writing, in their native and foreign languages.

PO-12) Use at least two foreign languages at an advanced level and a third foreign language at a level sufficient to translate into their mother tongue.
