About Us

Our Faculty, one of the oldest and most esteemed academic units of our university, comprises eight departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Western Languages and Literatures, Turkish Language and Literature, and Sociology.

Committed to advancing expertise and knowledge in the fundamental sciences and the humanities, the Faculty, distinguished by its strong and accomplished academic staff, offers high-quality education and training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It also develops innovative interdisciplinary and interscientific (transdisciplinary and multidisciplinary) models of education and research. The Faculty aims to educate experts, researchers, and scientists who are capable of utilising knowledge at the highest level and who possess advanced problem-solving abilities, entrepreneurial skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning.

In line with our commitment to educational excellence, the “YTÜ-FEF Fundamental Sciences Education Model” was introduced in the Autumn semester of the 2024-2025 academic year across departments offering undergraduate programmes in English and Turkish. A key innovation within this model is the integration of compulsory courses such as Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Introduction to Basic Computer Technologies, Career Planning and Professional Ethics, and Social Responsibility and Justice into the revised curricula. This holistic approach to education and research places emphasis on fostering an awareness of social responsibility and a commitment to the common good, with the aim of enabling students to develop technological competencies, gain insight into career development and management, and cultivate a strong sense of social responsibility. In addition, the course Writing Skills for Scientific Research is offered to strengthen students’ ability to produce academic texts effectively in both Turkish and English.

Within this model, the vocational elective courses offered by our departments have been revised and systematically structured, and innovative certificate programmes aimed at fostering disciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific specialisation have been introduced. Students are encouraged to participate not only in the certificate programmes offered by their own departments but also in those available across other departments within the Faculty.

Recognising the significance of university-community engagement, our Faculty actively facilitates the transformation of academic knowledge into innovative products, processes, and services through a variety of collaborations with public institutions, the private sector, and non-governmental organisations. The number of protocols signed for social responsibility projects with public bodies continues to grow. These partnerships also afford students valuable real-world work experience, enhance their employability and job readiness, and support informed career planning

Our Faculty stands as a pioneer not only in education but also in research and development endeavours. Through state-of-the-art research and experimental laboratories, theoretical knowledge is rigorously complemented by practical application. Consequently, our students graduate not only as individuals adept at effectively utilising knowledge and technology but also as innovators equipped to advance their respective fields.

Enhancing the Faculty’s international recognition and scholarly impact remains a paramount priority. We actively promote the establishment of international educational and research collaborations and wholeheartedly support the engagement of our students and academics in global programmes, projects, and platforms.
