One of our university’s most established and prestigious academic units, our Faculty comprises eight departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Western Languages and Literatures, Turkish Language and Literature, and Sociology, offers high-quality education and instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Aiming to foster advanced knowledge and expertise in the basic and humanities sciences, our Faculty, with its strong and competent academic staff, develops innovative educational and research models that are interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary (beyond disciplines and multidisciplinary); and aims to train experts, researchers, and scientists who can apply their knowledge at the highest level and possess well-developed problem-solving, entrepreneurial, and lifelong learning skills.
In line with our commitment to excellence in education and teaching, the “YTÜ-FEF Basic Sciences Education Model” was launched in the Fall semester of the 2024–2025 academic year and is now being implemented in the departments of our Faculty that offer undergraduate programs in both English and Turkish. One of the innovations introduced under this model is the inclusion of the courses “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence,” “Introduction to Basic Computer Technologies,” “Career Planning and Professional Ethics,” and “Social Responsibility and Justice” as required courses in the updated curricula. Thus, within the framework of our holistic education and research approach—which centers on developing an awareness of social responsibility and societal benefit—we aim to help our students enhance their technological competencies, gain knowledge about career building and management, and develop a strong sense of social responsibility. In addition, the “Writing Skills for Scientific Research” course is offered to enhance our students’ ability to produce scientific texts in both Turkish and English. Under this model, we also update and systematically organize the professional elective courses in our departments to offer our students innovative certificate programs focused on both intra-disciplinary and interdisciplinary scientific specialization. In addition to the certificate programs offered by their own departments, our students are also given the opportunity to participate in certificate programs offered by other departments within our Faculty.
Recognizing the importance of university-community interaction, our Faculty supports the transformation of academic knowledge into innovative products, processes, and services by establishing various types of collaborations with public institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations. In this context, the number of protocols signed with various public institutions to carry out social responsibility initiatives is steadily increasing. These collaborations also enable our students to gain real-life and work experience, enhance their employability and readiness for the workforce, and engage in informed career planning.
Our Faculty, which is a pioneer not only in education but also in research and development activities, reinforces theoretical knowledge with practical applications through modern research laboratories and experimental research facilities. As a result, our students graduate not only as individuals capable of effectively utilizing knowledge and technology but also as individuals equipped to generate innovation in these fields.
Recognizing the enhancement of our Faculty’s international recognition and influence as one of its primary objectives, we strongly encourage the development of international education and research collaborations and vigorously support the active participation of our students and faculty members in international programs, projects, and platforms.
